Mid-April Planting:
Peas may be planted.
Late-April/Early May
Onions and strawberry plants can go in by late-april. Onion plants will survive cold temperatures down to 18 degrees.
Cole Crops can also go in by late-April or early May as well.
Mid-Late May
Tomatoes & pepper transplants may freeze off very easily, but you get a better crop if you plant them earlier. Traditionally weren't planted until Memorial Day when frosts are not likely to occur. However, a lot of people will start them in the ground in mid-May. They can be covered or frost irrigated to give you a jump on the season.
Melons and vine crop transplants can generally be put in around the 25th of May. If you are going to have a cool, wet period, it is better to weather the plants in the garage or on the porch.
Planting Corn:
Corn needs to have 50 degree soil temperature. A few growers will have put in bare ground corn by mid-April, and for them it’s worth the risk. These need to be early cold tolerant varieties. The seed that we handle (Love-Me-Tender & Revelation) both need warmer soils, 60 degree minimum. However, if the corn is planted shallow (3/4 inch) on a sunny day the soil will be warmer than the high temperature. On a dry year like this, make sure the seeds are in moisture when you plant them. For supersweet corn, the first day the seed is in the ground, it is important to have it warm.
